It is with great pleasure that we begin this timeline of Gloversville. As this is an ongoing project we will update periodically throughout our journey into the great past of our city. Our hope is that we will be able to hyperlink a great deal of this information to corresponding articles on the internet so that everyone can make this journey with us.

1816 - The name Stump City was first used to describe the surrounding hamlet by Jonathan Sedgwick
1828 - The first Post Office is established and name Gloversville is chosen to represent the area as a more suitable description of the growing area.
1829 - Henry Churchill became the first postmaster, officially, on January 29th.
1831 - The Kingsborough Academy was bulit on the corner of Kingsboro Ave. and Academy Pl. and later demolished in 1900. Private school 1831-1863, Public Elementary School 1863-1900
1853 - Gloversville is incorporated as a village
1857 - James Barr was appointed as the first policeman in Gloversville on May 18th.
1867 - The Fonda, Johnstown & Gloversville Railroad is founded and construction would end up taking nearly three and a half years to complete.
1870 - The locomotive named "Pioneer" became the first to operated on the Fonda, Johnstown & Gloversville Railroad purchased from Manchester Locomotive Works with the first passenger train passing on November 29th.
1871 - Messrs. Newton and Titus erect a machine shop near Gloversville passenger depot to do repair work for the railroad and supply the leather industry with machines for their trade.
1873 - By March the F. J. & G. R. R. operated with three locomotives, listed in order as purchased new, "Pioneer," "Cayadutta," and "W. J. Heacock."
1877 - May 21st was the date of the great fire on N. Main Street. The fire began at Mr. Bellows store and destroyed all the buildings on the west side of the street from Church Street to Middle Street.
1880 - The Levi Parsons Library of Gloversville and Kingsboro was incorporated on June 15th. A year membership cost $2 per person.
1881 - The Kasson Opera House, founded by proprietor A.J. Kasson, was built. W.R. Washburn was his assistant manager and A.D Bedford was his secretary. This building is now known as Memorial Hall.
1888 - The Gloversville Free Library is established.
1890 - Gloversville is incorporated as a city.
1891 - The Gloversville Street Electric Railway is Founded.
1891 - Fire destroyed the Burlington Hotel on Bleeker Street Square on October 2nd. Later this location would house the YWCA and currently Skyheart Studios.
1892 - George L. Fort was installed as the first paid Gloversville Fire Chief in May.
1893 - The first electric railway run from Fonda to Gloversville was on June 29th.
1893 - The Gloversville Street Electric Railway and The Cayadutta Electric Railroad merge on December 14th.
1894 - On May 30th the original Nathan Littauer Hospital opened on Littauer Place.
1895- The Teetz Block disaster occurred on April 16th at 46-48 S. Main Street killing two and injuring four.
1902- The North Main Street Fire Station is built.
1902 - Andrew Carnegie gave $50,000 for the construction of the Carnegie Building on East Fulton Street to be used as a library.
1905 - The Gloversville Free Library moved into the Carnegie Building and opened in December.
1912 - The Gloversville Fire Department became motorized when a car was purchased for the Chief. This vehicle carried chemicals and a roll of hose.
1914 - The Glove Theatre was built on October 9th and was owned by Dr. Henry Cady and George Dartch.
1916 - On March 17th the Marley Block fire, located three buildings down from the Kasson Opera house heading south, destroyed J.C, Marley & Son Cigar Manufacturers store.
1950 - Pleasant Square Volunteer Fire Co. is built at 135 Easterly Street in the Town of Johnstown down the road from the present location of Nathan Littauer Hospital.
1968 - The new location of Nathan Littauer Hospital opened at 99 East State Street in September.
1969 - The Gloversville Passenger Depot burns to the ground on September 19th. The cause of the fire is not mentioned.
1974 - The Delaware Otsego System of Cooperstown, New York aquires the F. J. & G. R. R.
1984 - The Delaware Otsego System abandons the Fonda, Johnstown & Gloversville Railroad and there is no interest from outside parties to run the line.
2005 - The Gloversville Public Library was established as a school district public library with the passing of a proposition on June 14th.
