Our Veteran's Day

With the devastation and the tragedies we’ve heard over the past week with Hurricane Sandy, it is also important to remember and reflect on this coming weekend – Veterans Day. We are reminded by our friends, family and news reports about the sacrifices our men and women in uniform have made in recent and current wars overseas. Now, we have also seen them in our backyards and neighborhoods helping with rescues and response to Sandy.

They are committed heroes. They are our sons, daughters, friends and neighbors.

Neighborhood Watch Meeting

The Neighborhood Watch meeting went exceptionally well tonight. There were individuals that I have not seen at prior meetings that had great ideas to contribute. The group is on the lookout for more volunteers to get involved and to spread the word. You don’t need to attend meetings in order to get involved. The idea is to form a network of people who are looking out for each other. How well do you know your neighbors? Go introduce yourself! Let them know that when they aren’t home you’ll be looking out for the welfare of their property and ask if they will do the same for you. If you feel uncomfortable reporting an incident to the police department because you worry about the repercussions you can call a member in your area who will call on your behalf.

We, I stress 'we' because I am an active member and strong believer in this, want to do as much as possible as citizens to improve our city. That means working with public officials and law enforcement closely. I would like to thank Chief of Police Donald VanDeusen for repeatedly coming to meetings to answer questions and to advise the public on the best course of action, as well as Judge John Clo for coming to answer legal questions so that we are always on the right track. Thank you to the concerned citizens who have gotten involved and taken on this task. And finally, Councilwoman Robin Wentworth for carrying the torch to get this all started and motivating everyone to remain steadfast. We can take back our city from crime and violence, but only as a group equipped with the know-how to get the job done right.
