Happy New Year!

Well folks we have successfully survived our entry into the year 2012! I hope everyone had a safe and fun New Year’s Eve. Also, congratulations to incoming Gloversville Common Council members, Art Simonds and Stephen Mahoney on being sworn in this morning and a special welcome to our new city judge, Mr. John Clo.
As a community I hope we can come together this year and following years to help clean up and improve Gloversville. It may not always seem like it, but life is slowly being breathed back into downtown. First, we have the Mohawk Harvest Cooperative market that has continued to offer wonderful goods over the past couple of years and has expanded in its new location at 30 North Main Street. This is in addition to ongoing community cooperation and investment in revitalizing the Schine Building. We also have a Sticks N’ Stones Antiques, Frank’s Barber Shop and a new computer service shop, just to name a few.
So where do we go from here? As of 1/1/2012, a poll on LeaderHerald.com indicated that only 30% of respondents believe the local economy will improve this year while 70% believe it will not. However in reality, things are not always as dreary as they seem to be; slow progress is still progress. The important thing is to remember that we need to support these efforts. Stop in and see what our local businesses have to offer, and if you don’t see anything that strikes your fancy at least let them know you appreciate their commitment to our community. I am sure they would love to be reminded now and again. Finally, as residents of Gloversville, we need to become engaged and see how we as members of a community can continue to move things in the right direction.
There are always ways to get involved: Last year members of the community made important steps in organizing a neighborhood watch program to help make our fine city safer. Remember if you see something, say something. If the police department doesn’t know something is happening they can’t assist us. Also, there are always opportunities to volunteer you time in organizing events such as Gloversville’s Rail Fest. For more information, visit the RailFest Gloversville Facebook page. These are just a few examples of the many ways you can get involved. As always, we love suggestions. If you know of a creative way, big or small, to get involved in our community, leave us a comment!
As always we appreciate those of you in the community who try to make our city a better place and we hope you all a happy new year!
