Following Mayor Dayton King's Facebook annoucement that he would seek approval from the Common Council to hire an outside contractor to remove snow banks, the Common Council and Kevin Jones, the Department of Public Works Director, decided at the meeting last night that the snow removal process will continue to be completed by the Department of Public Works.
It is my understanding that it would more cost effective for DPW to continue the work as opposed to paying prevailing wage to contract the work out. Also, being that a contractor would most likely be utilizing a bucket loader (construction equipment) and not specialized snow removal equipment, it was decided that DPW would be able to completed the work faster. It was also pointed out that it is too late in the season to seek bids as the snow emergency would have passed by the time the process was completed.
The DPW and emergency response agencies are in the process of making a priority list in addition to streets bordering our schools and will use that to determine the order in which snow banks are cut back.
